B A S E D I N P O R T L A N D , M A I N E , I offer top-quality creative work for print and multimedia. Trained the old-fashioned way in the canyons of Manhattan, I embraced digital tools three decades ago but have been delivering for my clients since the analog days of 1986. I offer experience, vision, versatility, sensitivity, competence, and my favorite project continues to be the next one.
W H E N I W A S A P P R O A C H E D to design this cover, I was excited at the prospect of exploring cutting-edge, left-field design solutions, something I rarely get to do with non-fiction book covers. I figured, hey, Maynard James Keenan is the shapeshifter artist who fronts Tool, one of the more daring, cutting-edge rock bands of its generation.
After I received the photo, I came up with some typography I thought would complement the stark, industrial, and coolly elegant vibe of his portrait. Lots of diagonals, sans-serif typefaces, some distress, computer fonts and such. But Keenan rejected all of my early sketches. What he was after was typography usually seen on vintage books of fairy tales. Say what?! Back to work I went and found this lovely font (I will find out is name) that did the trick. For the final touch, I included a border ornament based on a lovely mint wrapper that I had pinned to my studio wall for years.
